Hydraulic Seals
Pneumatic and Hydraulic seals are rings that are designed to seal areas between the components inside a hydraulic cylinder. A hydraulic cylinder contains many different components, some of which are exposed to high pressure, high temperature and fluids. Hydraulic seals are designed to fit the specific components in a hydraulic cylinder while creating a leak-proof seal around them, to prevent fluid from leaking around these components.
Static vs Dynamic Hydraulic Seals
Hydraulic seals are either static or dynamic, depending on their application. Both seal types are used in hydraulic cylinders. The difference is that static seals remain stationary, whereas dynamic seals are exposed to motion.
Static hydraulic seals
They are used in applications where the element with which it’s used doesn’t move. The static hydraulic seals are not exposed to movement, but they are still exposed to high pressure.Dynamic hydraulic seals
On the other hand, Dynamic seals are exposed to movement.
Ex. Rod seals are a type of dynamic hydraulic seal. A piston rod is a moving part, and the Rod seals are designed to seal these piston rods.
Hydraulic Seal MaterialsYou can find hydraulic seals available in several materials such as:
- Rubber: They are elastic, resistant to cracking and long-lasting.
- Polyurethane: Polyurethane has many of the same qualities as rubber, but they are typically stronger and better protected against wear.
- Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): PTFE is a synthetic material that’s flexible, strong, and resistant to extreme temperatures.
Shared for all is their ability to withstand high pressure and high temperatures. They have also very good sealing capability against leaks and are very combability with chemicals.
Overview of Hydraulic Seal types
Piston Seals
Piston Seals prevent fluid or other media to by-pass the piston as the system pressure pushes the piston down the cylinder during a pressure cycle. They are generally single-acting seals, which means the stress acts only on one side; and double-acting seals, which means the stress acts on both sides.Rod Seals
Rod Seals are deliberated to be the most substantial component of a cylinder sealing configuration. The seals help prevent pressurized hydraulic fluid within the cylinder from leaking. In addition to keeping fluid from leaking, seals also help keep dirt and contaminants out of the cylinder, which extends the lifespan of the cylinder.Wiper Seals
Wiper Seals (also called Scraper Seals) generally are used together with other sealing components such as the rod seal. Their function is to scrape of dirt from the rod and to prevent dirt to enter the cylinder.Wear Rings
Wear Rings (also called Guide-ring) are used to keep the piston centralized. The Wear ring makes sure to grants for equal and even wear, and stress allotment on the seals. They are used together with Rod and Piston seals installations.Buy Hydraulic seals at M Seals
